Photonic crystal

A photonic crystal is an optical nanostructure in which the refractive index changes periodically, affecting the propagation of light in a manner analogous to how atomic lattices affect electron conductivity in semiconductors. These structures occur naturally as structural coloration and animal reflectors, and artificially promise a range of applications in light manipulation.
